  • Then/Now: Pop Stars B.S. (Before Stylists)

For stars who command today’s concert stages, everything is perfectly coordinated and styled to enhance their successful musical personae. But today’s pop supserstars didn’t start out with stylists, choreographers, and a crew of hundreds backstage.

They did, however, start out with terrible hair!

Take a look at these pics our friends at Snakkle.com sent over to see what some music stars looked like when they were left to style themselves solo in their earliest years.

Mariah Carey in 1987 and Today

Bruno Mars in 2003 and Today

How adorable was a young Peter Gene Hernandez a.k.a. Bruno Mars and his huge Afro in 2003? The Hawaiian-born singer was raised in a musical family and was performing on stage at an early age.

Mars eventually cut off his baby locks to become the best-selling digital artist of 2011 – looking very dapper in the process.

    Madonna in 1975 and Today

The ever-youthful Madonna was definitely a child of the ’70s — ’70s hair and all. The Michigan-born singer was much more demure (and born a brunette) in her junior high school photo before metamorphosing into a world-renown icon and adopting her signature blonde shade.

Vanilla Ice in 1986 and Today

Texas-born Robert Matthew Van Winkle, better known by his rapper stage name, is less “Ice, Ice, Baby” in 1986 and more “Yikes! Yikes, lady!” Luckily for Vanilla Ice and his rapping career, he chose to abandon his punk-rock locks for a blander (and often imitated) fade cut with highlights in the front during the early 90s.
