  • Mark Ballas down for same-sex couples on 'Dancing With the Stars,' but ABC is not

Has the time come for ABC’s hit, “Dancing with the Stars,” to pair up same sex couples?

“DWTS” featured dancer Mark Ballas thinks so.

“I would be totally cool with it,” Ballas told the entertainment website Popeater. “There are other competitions where they have same sex couples. I’d support it. There is a slight inherent disadvantage. Two girls and two men just can’t move like a man and a woman. But you can try.”

And despite stereotypes about men who take up professional dancing, the current cast of DWTS is mostly straight, Ballas said.

“We have eight male professional dancers and one is gay,” Ballas explained. “I never dealt with the stigma, I was at a performing arts school, so it wasn’t an issue. I always thought if I were ever confronted about it, I’d just say, “Well, while you’re on the football field with a bunch of dudes, I’ll be dancing with a bunch of girls.”

“It doesn’t make sense that men wouldn’t want to dance,” adds Ballas. “How can you not want to dance with your girl? How can you not want to do that?”

Ballas, who has reportedly romanced “American Idol” finalist Pia Toscano, is open to doing the mambo with Ricky Martin on “Dancing with the Stars” next season, saying: “I’d be down!”

But Ballas can put down his maracas, as a pairing with Martin would be an extremely unlikely scenario.

“ABC execs wouldn’t consider it,” a source tells FOX411.com. “They’re not hot on the idea of casting same sex couples.”
