  • Star magazine apologizes to Katie Holmes ... ON ITS COVER

In a rare move, “Star” magazine has apologized for a misleading cover on actress Katie Holmes.

The tabloid’s January 31st issue featured a picture of Mrs. Tom Cruise looking a bit dazed and a giant headline that read, “Addiction Nightmare: Katie DRUG SHOCKER!”

The story inside read that some of Scientology’s auditing practices leave a subject with “a temporary feeling of euphoria, followed by a crash and a craving for more,” but had no mention Holmes being addicted to drugs.

The May 9th issue features the headline on its cover, “STAR APOLOGIZES TO KATIE HOLMES-INSIDE” and a small item that reads, “In a recent issue of Star, we published headlines about Katie Holmes that could be read to suggest that she was addicted to drugs. Star did not intend to suggest that Ms. Holmes was a drug addict or was undergoing treatment for a drug addiction. Star apologizes to Ms. Holmes for any misperception and will be making a substantial donation to charity on Ms. Holmes’ behalf for any harm that we may have caused.”

Star’s sudden remorse and grand generosity was prompted by the settlement of a $50 million defamation lawsuit that Holmes levied against Star’s parent company, American Media Inc.

Financial terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

“I’m pleased that this lawsuit could be resolved amicably and accept American Media’s apology. With this dispute out of the way, I look forward to once again focusing my attention on my family and career,” Holmes said in a statement.

Holmes’ attorney, Aaron Moss, warned that AMI’s expensive settlement was “a lesson to other tabloids that if they print false and defamatory stories about Katie, she will stand up for her legal rights.”
