    FOX 411 | Editor

    Film director Oliver Stone (AP)

Controversial film director Oliver Stone defended the subject of his latest documentary “South of the Border” this weekend, calling Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, “an honest man.”

Speaking at Pepperdine University, Stone gave a special screening of the film and then hosting a Q&A on the content. The film is about Stone’s own personal journey into South America, where he explores the civil unrest and bloodshed in the region. But in the process, he slams the American government and the media in what most critics call his most divisive film yet.

But while he chats up some of the continent’s most well known and even notorious figures, including Bolivia’s Evo Morales, Cuba’s Raul Castro and Argentina’s Cristina Kirchner, it is Chavez who earns the most screen time.

  • Gwyneth Paltrow: People Are So Mean to Me!

    FOX 411 | Editor

“Country Strong” star Gwyneth Paltrow says mean feedback from critics of her blog Goop almost caused her to shut down the page completely.

In the March issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Paltrow poses in a ten-page spread of sexy, seventies-inspired fashion. Inside, she talks about the often-criticized blog she writes.

“Any time you do anything with any degree of sincerity, people make fun of you.  That’s totally fine. I don’t care. I don’t read any of it. My thing with Goop has always been, if you don’t like it, then don’t log onto it,” she said. “

There were a couple of times when I thought “I’m just gonna stop doing it.  People are so mean to me.  I don’t want to do it.” But then I was like, “Who cares what some lame person out there says? “I was in Italy once, and this old man came up to me and said,” I had the best time in Nashville because of Goop.” And that is so worth it to me.”

The actress also discusses her fear of performing at the CMA Awards, as well as her musical inspiration.

  • Steven Tyler's turn on 'Idol' boosting Aerosmith sales

    Meaghan Murphy |

Looks like Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler is having the last laugh on his bandmates.

Joe Perry et al raked him over the coals for joining “American Idol” as a judge for its 10th season, but due to the 60-something rocker’s smooth charm and the incessant playing of “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” on the show, sales of old Aerosmith songs are zooming up the charts.

Aerosmith’s 1998 power ballad, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” is currently #22 on Apple’s iTunes chart, and not one but two versions of Aerosmith’s 1973 hit “Dream On” are charting, at #77 and #115, respectively.

John Travolta sat down for a nice Italian dinner with John Angelo Gotti, Jr. — son of infamous New York mob boss John Gotti — at Amici’s in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles Wednesday night.

No guns were secretly retrieved from the lavatory, no police captains were shot. Instead the two men broke bread over Travolta playing the elder Gotti in biopic about the gangster’s life story.

And from the photo, it looks like Gotti Jr. took a doggie bag home.

VIDEO: Watch Travolta and Gotti’s meeting.

“He’s a tremendous actor and he’ll feel the part,” the younger Gotti said of Travolta after the meal. Noting that he had seen all of his films, Gotti declared, “He nails every single one and he can do this too, I’m totally confident.”

(Gotti is right. “Look Who’s Talking” is a tour de force.)

Joining the men at the family-style dinner were the biopic’s director Nick Cassavetes and executive producer Marc Fiore.

  • Oscar nominee James Franco says porn stars are great actors

    FOX 411 | Editor

Oscar-nominated James Franco definitely takes his acting seriously, especially when it comes to his performance in the bedroom.

“I think if anybody who has made a home sex tape knows, what feels best doesn’t always look best,” a frank Franco shared at Newsweek’s 14th Annual Oscar Round Table this week. “I remember when I was 19 doing that, and then watching it back and thinking, oh, that looks horrible. So…yeah, you have a lot of respect for those actors in pornography, because they are really not just doing it, they’re really selling it.”

The panel, which included Colin Firth, Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams, had everyone talking about S-E-X.

“For me, it’s different every time,” Nicole Kidman said of her rules for on-screen nookie. “If the film is worthy, I’m willing to explore.”

Annette Bening said she had fun getting intimate with her female costar in the Oscar-nominated “The Kids are All Right.”
