  • Liam Neeson to replace Mel Gibson in 'Hangover 2' cameo

Mel Gibson (left) will be replaced by Liam Neeson in 'The Hangover 2'

Mel Gibson’s controversial “Hangover 2” role will instead go to actor Liam Neeson after the cast protested against using Gibson following a series of scandals involving the Oscar-winning actor.

Neeson, who has appeared in such major blockbusters as “The A-Team” and “Clash of the Titans,” will take on the role of a tattoo artist in “The Hangover 2” that was originally supposed to go Gibson. The Oscar-nominated actor told Variety that he was called to do a “one-day shoot” for the follow-up to the 2009 hit comedy.

Gibson, 54, has faced one blow to his career after the next after a series of recorded conversations with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva leaked earlier this year. The tapes featured a voice that sounded like Gibson making racial comments and violent threats against Grigorieva. Gibson also came under fire for anti-Semitic remarks made in 2006 following a drunk-driving arrest.

The “Hangover 2” cameo news leaked last week and was met almost immediately with protest from the cast, with actor Zach Galfianakis reportedly leading the charge.

Gibson is said to be enraged at being dropped from the film, especially in light of convicted rapist Mike Tyson’s appearance in the first film.
