  • IDOL 411: This time, America decides not to 'save' Big Mike

“American Idol” was a wild ride for Michael Lynche.
In January, rumors swirled that he was getting kicked out of the Top 24 … even though he’d missed his daughter’s birth to audition for the show. Two months later, he simply didn’t get enough votes to stay in the competition.
The judge’s “save” bought him five more weeks, but on Wednesday, Michael “Big Mike” Lynche finally reached the end of the line.
As readers of this blog know, Big Mike was one of our favorite contestants this season. He actually gave our favorite performance of the year to date when he sang “This Woman’s Work” — the one that made Kara cry.
Some writers have attributed a recent dip in “Idol” ratings to a lack of big personalities on the show — but beyond being really “Big,” Mike had more than enough personality to go around. He even let us witness the birth of his baby.
Maybe he didn’t achieve his goal of making it into the Top 3 … but as Big Mike fans, we’re satisfied with fourth place. Wednesday’s guest performer Chris Daughtry came in fourth, and as Ryan put it, he’s “bigger than life” now.
Frankly, we thought Mike gave the best performance of the night on Tuesday, singing Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There.” He sang it even better on Wednesday.
But overall, Mike wasn’t consistently great enough to be considered a serious contender for the crown, and we had a feeling that he and Aaron would go home around the same time.
We also lumped Casey in that general area, who incidentally looked genuinely shocked to learn he wasn’t going home on Wednesday. We’re predicting a bronze medal for Casey … but if he puts in another “Jealous Guy”-caliber performance, anything can happen.
One thing’s for sure: Without Mike in the mix, the competition will feel a lot smaller next week.
