  • IDOL 411: Ellen, Ryan make inappropriate comments on Elvis night

    fat elvis

We can’t help but feel that Elvis Presley wouldn’t have been “All Shook Up” by Tuesday night’s “American Idol” tribute in his honor . . .  except perhaps by Ellen DeGeneres’ use of the word “horny.”

Unlike last week’s Lennon/McCartney tribute, which brought out the best in the contestants, Elvis night — a night honoring one of the best performers of all time — was very sleepy. In fact, it was such an off night that Tim Urban actually gave one of the evening’s best performances.

But nobody let the King down as much as Andrew Garcia. The extremely likable guest mentor (and Season 8 runner-up) Adam Lambert warned Andrew that his performance of “Hound Dog” was boring, and it appears that Andrew didn’t take Adam’s advice to “step his game up” in time for the show. The slowed-down arrangement zapped the soul right out of the song — as Simon put it, it was as if all of Andrew’s “coolness was being sucked out of him.” Andrew was in the bottom three last week, and we’d be surprised if he didn’t go home Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, “Teflon” Tim Urban is having a quite a comeback. We are as surprised as you are to report that his performance of “I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You” was one of the best of the night — so good that Ryan was actually inspired to slow dance with another man. We agreed with Kara when she called it “my favorite Tim performance ever,” and Simon went so far as to say Tim went from “zero to hero in two weeks.”

Aaron Kelly, singing “Blue Suede Shoes,” also gave one of our favorite performances of the night. He looked much cooler than he ever has, from his funky fauxhawk to snazzy boots, and he even threw in some cute little dance moves. We would have liked to see a little more where that came from, but Aaron put more energy into that performance than he ever has, so as Simon would say, well done.

Katie Stevens also tried to pump some personality into her performance of “Baby, What You Want Me to Do,” with mixed results. She did come off as “sassy,” as Randy so aptly put it, but it wasn’t a memorable performance, other than when Ellen called it a “horny song . . . [there were] a lot of horns in it.” Ellen’s only rival for most inappropriate comment of the night? When Ryan told Adam Lambert, “My tongue is not nearly as talented as yours.”

Big Mike needed to be great after getting the save last week. Was he? It depends on your personal taste. If Mike’s soulfulness appeals to you, he delivered with a very personal-feeling “In the Ghetto.” If you like more action, you were probably very bored. We’re inclined to think Mike should have done something with a little more punch for his “comeback,” but if “Eleanor Rigby” is any indicator, people aren’t looking for punch from Big Mike.

Poor Siobhan Magnus. You know how some contestants, like Tim and Katie, seem to let criticism from the judges just roll off their shoulders? Siobhan is exactly the opposite. She appears mortally wounded whenever the judges don’t like her performances . . . and overall, they haven’t been liking her so much lately. We think they underrated her performance of “Suspicious Minds,” which had some really amazing parts — she’s clearly one of the best singers on the show. Siobhan was obviously insulted, and when Kara and Simon claimed to be confused by “who she is,” she shot back that even she can’t label herself, so she doesn’t think it’s “necessary to be labeled.” This was a powerful statement, especially with Adam Lambert as guest mentor, so we think it scored her some points.

That leaves Crystal, Casey and Lee. We read a prediction somewhere recently that Crystal, Casey and Lee will make up the final three, and it’s looking more and more possible. Crystal and Casey are similar in that even when they aren’t at their absolute best, they’re Always Solid.

Casey James’ “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” was one of his weaker performances, but we seriously doubt he’ll be in the bottom three.

Crystal Bowersox is not only Always Solid, she’s also Always Good. We didn’t love her performance of “Saved,” but even if she’s not our favorite personality, we think it’s obvious that she’s the most talented contestant this year.

Lee Dewyze improves as a performer every week — “A Little Less Conversation” was a little less awkward than he has been in the past, and his gravelly voice is also growing on us. But as Kara said, he still needs to loosen up.

VOTE: Who’s your pick to be the next Idol?

So who will join Andrew in the bottom three? In our opinion, it’s between Aaron, Big Mike and Katie. Aaron was in the bottom three last week, and while we liked his performance of “Blue Suede Shoes,” Simon called it “karaoke.” We’re not sure Big Mike delivered enough impact to get back on track. And Katie is always lurking on the edge.

Our prediction? Andrew and either Aaron or Katie go home. You can yell at us tomorrow if we’re wrong!
