The cast of the popular show “Dreamgirls” took to the stage last night at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. Tons of celebrities showed up to support their favorite musical including Angela Bassett with husband, Courtney B. Vance, Monique Coleman and Erica Hubbard. The original “girls” Jennifer Holliday, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Loretta Devine also came out to support the show that made them famous.

Bassett told Fox411 why she loves the classic musical about three young singers trying to make it in the early 1960’s. “[It’s] just music that grabs you right by the heart,” she explains. “It’s memorable music and incredible.”

The gorgeous Bassett, who started her career on stage before moving to film, loves that everyone can relate to the show. “It’s our history and it’s also a very human experience that we can all relate to,” she says.

The message that it sends really resonates with the Golden Globe winner. “Being the underdog, being the ugly duckling and just sticking with it and never giving up and then landing on top – That’s what we all hope for,” she tells Fox. “That’s what we live for, that’s what happens when we put one foot in front of the other.”

The music is “grand” as well according to the “ER” actress. “You can walk out of the theater humming or singing a tune. If that comes on the radio and my windows are up I may look crazy but I am singing,” she laughs.
