  • IDOL 411: Kara gets hot and bothered at male strip show audition

    KaraD

"American Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi may have just gotten married last July, but that didn't stop her from being just a wee bit too excited to see hunky contestant Casey James unbutton his shirt during Tuesday night's Denver auditions.

Kara wasn't the only one impressed by Casey's ... talents. Encore guest judge Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham said he had a "great look," and it was Randy who actually (half-jokingly) told him to take off his shirt altogether.

But Kara wasn't complaining. "You got to see 'Bikini Girl!'" she said to Simon, referring to last season's infamous half-naked contestant.

Guys who were hoping for more "Bikini Girl" action were most likely sorely disappointed Tuesday night as "Idol" welcomed its first "Bikini Boy," 25-year-old Ty Hemmerling.

Hemmerling, however, offered little in the way of sex appeal or talent, and the judges walked out long before the audience was treated to a shot of him scratching his butt on camera.

Other than the male strip show, we noticed another theme in Denver: Simon seemed to be in love with the word "annoying."

Tori Kelly, a sweetly pretty 16-year-high school student, won raves from most of the judges, especially Posh, who called her "the whole package." But Simon said her voice was "almost annoying" and referred to her as a "human orange."

Then there was Austin Paul, the 22-year-old football player who reminded America of the jock they hated in high school. Cocky, conceited, and smug, Austin deserved it when Simon once again dropped the A-bomb, saying, "I think you can be very annoying."

Simon, however, saved his best insult of the night for Kimberly Kerbow, a gorgeous 24-year-old single mother who mysteriously wore a wig to her audition. Kimberly teased the famously vain Simon by looking right at him while singing the line, "I'd buy you Rogaine when you start losing all your hair."

"You're a single mom — I wonder why," he countered, as the other judges gasped with shock.

Another target of Simon's ire was 24-year-old Kenny Everett, who claimed to be the "male Mary J. Blige" but yelled more than he sang. "You sound like you've just been punched," Simon quipped.

And while he teased 22-year-old Nicci Nix for a voice so high-pitched it sounded like she'd "eaten helium," Simon ultimately praised her for flying 14 hours from Italy to Germany to Denver to audition, giving her one of four yeses.

We, on the other hand, were a bit mystified by this contestant. First of all, she sang a silly song that sounded like it belonged in a dance club. Secondly, she appeared (but it was unclear) to be a native of Florence, Italy. Shouldn't the "American Idol" be from America?

As auditions begin to come to a close, we feel compelled to once again round up the latest crop of inspirational contestants, such as 28-year-old former sort-of custodial kidnapping victim Mark Labriola (we agreed with Posh when she said he was "surprisingly good"); sunny and original 16-year-old Haeley Vaughn, who was born weighing only two pounds and lost her dad at age 10; and 24-year-old Danelle Hayes, yet another single mom who nailed her performance of Melissa Etheridge's "I'm the Only One."

"I don't know what's going on in your life, but you're almost broken," Simon told a tearful Danelle, who spoke of wanting to support her little boy while doing a job she loves. "You may have come here just in time."

Between the stripping, the screeching, and one sad story after another, the auditions are almost broken, too. T minus 7 days until Ellen gets here just in time.
