Alexa Ray Joel returned safely to the home of her mom, Christie Brinkley, after suffering a sleeping pill overdose in New York City over the weekend, sources tell Fox411.

Since then, her publicist has stated that Joel has gone to stay with her father, Billy Joel.

Friends tell Fox411 that Alexa is doing better, and, despite reports that she said in her 911 call that she “wanted to die,” they insist the overdose was an accident.

“Alexa puts a lot of pressure on herself to be her best at everything and she’s had a rough few months lately. She sees her father’s success in music and her mother’s beauty and career and it adds to her already existing desire to be the best,” one friend tells Fox411. “Alexa is a kind, warm person and she’s got a big heart. Managing her work through the difficult year in her love life was hard, [especially] when you hold yourself up against such powerful and successful parents. She was depressed and sad.”

Alexa ended a tumultuous relationship with Jimmy Riot, one of her bandmates, earlier this year.

A source tells Fox411 that Brinkley rushed to St. Vincent’s hospital to be with Alexa late Saturday afternoon, and she called Billy Joel on the way. Joel, who has been hiding out in his Sag Harbor Long Island home since his own split from wife Katie Lee, called Alexa immediately.

“Billy and Christie decided quickly that she would get Alexa and bring her home so they could be by her side. They love their daughter and they will take care of her and stay close this holiday,” says the insider. “Alexa needs some extra care, love and attention. She turns 24 right after Christmas and Christie and Billy will make sure she feels better. She is their number one priority.”

The source adds that the pressure Alexa puts on herself to succeed, plus her parents’ recent rough times with their ex-spouses, built on each other.

“Alexa suffers from similar artistic demons to her dad. She loves fiercely, works super hard and is very difficult on herself,” the source says. “She is sensitive and caring and she took some of the stress of her father’s relationship ending with Katie Lee and her mother’s trial against Peter Cook and internalized some of that. It’s difficult for her to navigate living her semi-public life from her parent’s fame. Adding the breakup with Jimmy to all that and it has been a lot for her to manage.”
